CounselPro for accountants

Workpapers built from statements

You were retained for the opinion, and the first three weeks go on keying rows out of PDFs and chasing the months nobody produced. Send the production instead, and the schedule comes back with the statement page behind every figure.

Proof of cash · Operating 2260Kestrel Machine Works · six cycles · sample schedule
Six statement cycles of one operating account: what each cycle opened at, the deposits in, the withdrawals out, what it closed at, and the statement pages the figures were read from. The footing row carries the opening balance of the first cycle, the deposits and withdrawals across all six, and the closing balance of the last.

The engagements

What you get retained for

One production, read the same way whatever the engagement is. The intake stays the same; the questions you put to it are yours.

Fraud and embezzlement investigations

Money out of an operating account, rolled up by who received it, so a vendor the records know only from these payments arrives as a name and a total rather than as a hunch.

Economic damages and lost profits

Deposits and disbursements by period and by entity, so the months before an event and the months after are counted off the statements themselves.

Marital estate and lifestyle analysis

Income computed from deposits, spending compared period to period, and the account one spouse never listed.

Family law matters

Insolvency and preference analysis

Every payment inside the lookback, insiders marked, with the days before the petition on each row.

Bankruptcy matters

Estate and trust accountings

The fiduciary period read account by account, so a beneficiary’s question about a withdrawal is answered on the page the bank printed it on.

Probate matters

Rebutting the other side’s expert

Read their schedule against the records. Every figure of yours opens the statement page it came from, and the arithmetic behind it prints with it.

Coverage · account-months produced against the months requested

Which months you actually got

Completeness comes before the opinion, and it is the procedure that used to cost a week of somebody’s time. Every account-month the production carried is mapped against the months the request asked for, so the holes have names before a schedule is built over them. A cycle that came in short is marked, and a month nobody sent reads as a hole in the record.

Account-months produced · Kestrel Machine WorksMarch 2024 to August 2025 · 6 accounts
  • Statement produced
  • Part of a cycle
  • Left open for review
  • Nothing produced

Fourteen account-months never arrived, and nine of them are the owner’s own accounts across the summer the engagement is about. That is a follow-up request, and it goes out on day one instead of in week three.

How a production is read

Support · the page behind every figure

Support behind every figure

Every row carries the statement page it was read from, so a figure in the schedule is one click from the line the bank printed. Ask the agent for a total and it prints the inputs beside the answer, so the arithmetic sits on the page with the number. Threads are shared across the firm, which is how the analyst who loaded the production and the partner signing the report end up reading the same one.

Where the hours go

The staff work and the expert work

CounselPro is the production engine under the engagement. It does the reading, the splitting and the arithmetic, and it hands the file over with the pages attached. What a client retains an expert for stays where it was.

What CounselPro does

Reads the productionBank statements, credit card statements and check images from national banks, regional banks and credit unions, scanned pages included, by building a reading plan for each layout it meets.
Splits the dumpOne PDF of a thousand pages comes back as individual statement cycles, per account, per month, with a cycle the client sent twice caught so the month counts once.
Balances every cycleEach cycle is checked against the beginning and ending totals printed on it. A cycle the records cannot prove is left open and flagged for you, with the page beside it.
Keeps every pageEach transaction, check and holding carries the statement page it was read from, from the extraction through to the exhibit.
Runs the first passIncome from deposits, spending by period, money out by recipient, and transfers between the client’s own accounts marked internal so a dollar is counted once.

What stays yours

The scopeWhich accounts, which periods, which procedures, and the standard the engagement is run to.
The judgmentWhich findings carry weight, which are noise, and which need a document a bank never printed.
The opinionThe conclusion, the words it is written in, and what you are prepared to put your name on.
The testimonyThe deposition, the cross, and every number you stand behind on the stand.
The clientThe engagement letter, the fee, and the call where you say what the records can settle.

One engagement, read end to end

An illustrative embezzlement referral, from the boxes to the schedule

A machine shop’s own counsel calls about a controller who signed the checks and reconciled the account. The production is four years of statements across the company’s operating, payroll and card accounts and the owner’s personal accounts, handed over as PDFs in no particular order.

The upshot

The schedule came back added up, the coverage map named the fourteen account-months still to ask for, and every hour after that went on the opinion.

Forensic accounting questions, answered

Scope, exports and what it reads

What documents does CounselPro read?
Bank statements, credit card statements and check images, from national banks, regional banks and credit unions. It builds a reading plan for each layout it meets rather than working from a fixed list, and scanned pages go through OCR first, so a clean scan reads better than a photocopy of a photocopy. Investment and retirement statements are coming in Q4 2026.
Can I export the data into my own workpapers?
CSV, XLSX, PDF and PNG. The transaction ledger, the schedules and any figure the agent draws all export, and every row carries the account, the direction and the statement page it was read from, so the reference survives the trip into your file.
What happens when a client sends the same statement twice?
The repeated cycle is caught and both copies are shown to you, so the month counts once. A discovery production that arrives as four overlapping PDF dumps is the normal case, not the hard one.
Does CounselPro replace a forensic accountant?
No. It does the work you would hand a staff accountant: the reading, the splitting, the arithmetic and the first pass over the records. The scope, the judgment, the opinion and the testimony are yours, and the schedule arrives with the pages attached so you can check it before you sign it.
Can I stand behind these numbers on cross-examination?
Every figure links back to the statement page it was read from, and every sum, ratio, percentage and date calculation runs in a calculator that prints its inputs beside the result. You can open the page in the room and read the printed line against the row.
How long does it take to read a production?
It runs in minutes, in the background, and statements appear in the case as they are read, so you can start on coverage while the rest of the stack is still going through. A four-year production across six accounts takes longer than one month of one account.
